Wood Treatments
Woodworm, Dry Rot and Wet Rot
Wood is a durable material which is resistant to most biological degrade providing it is kept dry. When wood becomes wet decay occurs with the type of decay depending on the type of wood, moisture content and atmospheric conditions.
Rot is one of the major causes of timber decay in old, historic and even modern buildings. The two most common types of wood rot include wet rot and dry rot, which are caused by fungal decay in building timbers. A wide range of fungus species, known as ‘lignicolous’ fungi are responsible for damage, which can affect roof joists, window frames, floorboards, stairs and skirting boards. Dampness and poor ventilation are usually the main reasons for rotting wood.
Woodworm is the generic term used to commonly describe the larvae stage of wood boring beetles that are typically seen emerging between April to October. As seasonal pests, woodworm can be found in any house where there is exposed timber but prefer damp conditions to thrive.
